Internationally known as the most famous food of Austria is the Wiener Schnitzel with french fries or potatoe salad.
Besides the famous Wiener Schnitzel there are also a lot of amazing sweets, warm pastries and beverages you really should try when you have the chance to visit Austria.
Beverages
Austrian coffee is known for its variety. Everywhere you can find those typical coffee houses with all the different kinds of coffee like a small or a big brown coffee, a melange and other tratitional coffees. One of the famous coffee houses is Café Sacher which is located in Salzburg, Vienna, Graz and Innsbruck.
Beer seems to be the number one beverage for Austrians. The average amount of beer one person drunk 2008 was 109.3 liter. This means the second place for Austria after the Czech Republic.
Wine is also a very popular beverage. Austria has a very long tradition of winegrowing. There are a lot of local wines with different tastes, depending on the region where the grapes grew and the different production processes.
snacks
You can eat this kind of snacks for dinner (you don't have to eat a warm dinner) or just when you are feeling hungry. There is a lot of mouth-watering food you can get, for example bread and pastry with different spreads, regional cheeses, bacon, sausages etc.

This is my favourite Austrian food.....
Warm pastry, for example warm apple strudel and a lot of other strudels with poppy seeds or some kind of creme cheese. There are also sweet dumplings filled with apricots or plums, covered with a mixture of in butter roastet breadcrumps, sugar and cinnemon:

sweets
When you have the opportunity, you have to try one Mozartkugel, the famous sweet from Salzburg. It is a chocolate ball filled with different layers: The inner core is made of a pistachio-marzipan-paste. This paste is surrounded by nougat. And this ball is finally dipped into dark chocolate.........
typical dishes
Besides the Wiener Schnitzel there are a lot of dishes with different kinds of meat, but a very popular one is the roast chicken (Brathendl). But there are also a lot of tratitional soups and hotpots with trational ingredients.
